As COVID-19 continues to obstruct our daily lives, the ways patients receive care shift to the virtual. During the adjustment period to contactless care, however, one important aspect is lacking: human empathy. Now more than ever, empathy is a crucial skill in medicine due to the absence of face-to-face contact and the human connection that comes with it.
How can medical professionals translate empathy through a screen? How can we better train medical staff to emotionally connect with their patients from miles away? Katharine Lawrence, a postdoctoral fellow at NYU Langone, discusses the importance of teaching empathy in both the physical and digital spaces and how technology with empathy and compassion at its core further improves patient-care interaction.
