Being Intentional About LGBTQ Inclusion

May 13, 2019
3:30pm - 4:00pm
Room 25

Over the course of the past two years, the Cleveland Clinic's LGBTQ Employee Resource Group identified an opportunity for further LGBTQ education, awareness, and engagement. In consultation with key executive sponsors and nationally recognized content experts, the clinic designed and launched an enterprise-wide diversity and inclusion training series focused specifically to engage this underserved population. More than 500 caregivers have participated in the trainings since they went live in fall of 2018.

In this session, attendees will hear about the project's key features and lessons learned. These include:

  • Curate the curriculum. The clinic tailor training to the audience (i.e. surgical caregivers vs. front-end registration caregivers).
  • Don’t go it alone. The clinic’s initiative relied heavily on external experts and internal leaders and groups, such as nursing and surgical operations.
  • Culture change takes time. The ability to better serve this population depends heavily the ability of caregivers to learn, unlearn, and be vulnerable with themselves and their teams.
